Below is an etsy convo, titled "quilt prices", I received last night.
Hi I was wondering if you actually sell the quilts you list this high. As well as I wanted to know the quality of them. Like do you make these yourself?
I was surprised at the tone of the convo. To me it seemed a tad hostile/negative. I did reply, in what I hope was a friendly/positive manner.
Hi Hannah, Yours is an unusual question. Yes, I do make these myself, and yes, I do sell them at the listed prices. I only use quilting quality 100% cotton fabric. Most of my commission customers enjoy following my blog, www.jansquilts.com. I hope this answers your question.
I haven't heard back from this gal, so I hope she's satisfied. Every post should have photos; these quilts now live happily in North Carolina.
May your bobbins always be full,
"Like do you make these yourself?" is amazing to me. It really underscores two things to me: 1. that people don't understand that you can make the things you see in a store (& in a much better quality) and 2. the reason why store bought goods are so cheap (in every meaning of the word) is bc the person making them is being paid poverty wages in their own country.
ReplyDeleteHaving bought the materials needed and having spent MONTHS piecing and hand quilting those fabrics to make a unique work of art, the only question I might have for you would be why you are charging so little? People who don't quilt just don't get it!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with the commenter above. Until you've made a quilt yourself, you don't understand the cost involved. People truly just don't get it. We aren't Walmart.
ReplyDeleteMost don't take a moment to think before sending off such a message and wouldn't have the working/practical knowledge of what goes into the finish. There are many things that today's quilter does and, perhaps, the most important one is 'education'! Explaining the process and the materials used, etc, is, most times, a revelation to the questioner and one that really is fully comprehended without first hand experience.......but we do what we can to inform. Your quilts are truly beautiful and very nicely priced, BTW!!!
ReplyDeleteThat actually made me laugh a little, maybe she was hoping to like find out where in China you buy them from at $2 each, then sell them for so much more, bummer that you make them yourself. It's pretty sad that people have no idea.
ReplyDeleteIs the elephant quilt one of yours? I don't think I've seen it before and I'm in love.
