Vintage Quilt Revival QAL Quilt is finished!

Yay!  I'm so happy to have this marked "done".   I joined the San Diego Modern Quilt Guild's Vintage Quilt Revival QAL over a year ago, in August 2014.  It was a good adventure and I learned a lot.  

I had no suggestions for thread, but my LAQ, Janiel Millers' first suggestion was variegated and that's what we stayed with.  I think it was a perfect choice.

I photographed the quilt on a steep grassy bank and forgot to get a photo of the back.  It's all back with the exception of this orphan block.  The quilt measures 70" x 87".

I've got a stack of quilts to bind...

And they're all queen-size.  From the top, Autumn Leaves 95 x 95", Vintage Modern 70 x 87", and Mandalay HSR 85 x 88.5".

It took me about 4 days to get to this point.  I had thought I'd have all the bindings sewn on by now, so much for thinking!

The colors of the bindings aren't showing up very well from the top, they ar Kona Wheat, Kona Black and Kona Cadet.

Now, I'm ready to start on the first one.  Photos to follow, of course.

Vintage Quilt Revival QAL Quilt Top is finished!

I decided to join my Vintage Quilt Revival blocks on-point.  I thought they looked more "modern" this way.  I took Faith Jones' design idea and made it my own.  I loved the connecting blocks with the square in the middle, but I hated using the same blocks around the edges.  To me, that was super wasteful.  

I am so happy I joined this Quilt Along.  The finished size is 68 inches x 86 inches a bit smaller than the example.

Vintage Quilt Revival QAL with the San Diego Modern Quilt Guild

This quilt will be sewn on the diagonal since I decided to set the blocks on point.  Of course that makes my life more difficult, since I don't have a design wall to lay the blocks on.  I'm using an old quilt, on the garage floor and I took photos of each step and thought I'd show them in a slideshow, in case you're interested in seeing the process.  I did this early in the morning because the garage doesn't have AC, duh, and it's going to be blazing hot today.

SDMQG Vintage Quilt Revival QAL ~ July Block

This is the final block to be constructed for the San Diego Modern Quilt Guild Vintage Quilt Revival Quilt Along!  (Say that fast without stumbling.)  There was only one block assigned for July it's called Double Windmill.  It's a paper-pieced block and you may get tired of reading this, I love it!

Above is my first attempt at photographing all the blocks together.  Yee old tennis ball fits right in, don't cha think?  I walked my ladder to the other end and took the photo below.  These were taken on my dirty garage floor.  I did sweep it, but because of the drought, I'm not washing it.

This won't be the final layout, I just slapped them down, but they do look good if I say so myself.  I made a total of 21 blocks for this QAL, one didn't make the cut for the photo.  The orphan block will probably end up on the back of the quilt.

This is my new ladder.  I brought it home after my stepmother passed away.  I have no idea, but I like to think my great Dad finished it so nicely.

Yay!  For the moment, I caught up on my QAL blocks   I showing the photos taken outside and indoors because the colors look so different.

These blocks are called Geometric Star, on the left, and Diamond Panes, on the right.  Yes, I got a pedi, today.

These blocks are called Mosaic No 8 and Tilted Star, made for April.  Now, I'm all caught up!

I made two of the Mosaic No 8, one hot and one cool.  I'll decide later which one I'll use in the quilt, the other will certainly find a good home, perhaps in the quilt back.

SDMQG Vintage Quilt Revival QAL ~ 2nd March Block

This is the 2nd March block.  No paper-piecing, but lots of bias edges; I spray-starched the heck out of those pieces.  I used the Washi print because I really didn't want an 8.5" solid color diamond in the middle of the block.  I'm hoping to be caught up with the April blocks by Monday.  Goals are good.

Scrappy Scrapalious

 I seems I've been working on this scrappy quilt top forever.  It has been a pretty long time, the month of March.  It's large, 88x88", and it's going on my bed when it's finished.  I started sorting scraps, and I had a mountain of them.  First, I removed all the solids, then all the really girly prints.

From the remaining scraps, some pieces were very small and netted one or two 2.5x5" strips, and some were large enough to cut many strips.  As I worked, at each stage, I kept shuffling the strips so the fabrics would be scattered across the quilt, as much as possible.  Working without a design wall, forces me to be creative in the assembly.  I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Before I decide on the quilt back, I want to work on the San Diego Modern Quilt Guild Vintage Quilt Revival QAL March and April blocks and the 2015 Mystery Quilt Along with Pat Sloan March and April blocks.

There's always something to do around here.  Since my husband passed away on January 27th, I seem to have less time for my two passions, quilting and reading.  Bob took up a lot slack around here, so I could indulge in quilting and reading.

Feeling good

My life has been turned upside down, recently, but it felt good to accomplish the February blocks for the San Diego Modern Quilt Guild Vintage Quilt Revival QAL.  These make 11 blocks completed and 8 more, to go.

I have several quilts I want to make, including some really scrappy ones to try to use up part of my scrap pile, but my husband passed away on 1/27, and there is so much to do dealing with that, quilting and most other things have taken a backseat.

This is called "Classic Red Cross Block".  It is a paper-pieced block, it's not perfect, but I really love how it turned out.  I'm trying to keep my blocks for the QAL, very modern.

We're having some much needed rain, so my photos were all taken inside.  Since I've become Bob's caregiver, I've lost some of  my quilting time. I'm going to catch up this month, I hope!

This is Ben, waiting for me to finish, so I can take him and Frisco for a walk in the rain.

I decided to get right on the October Blocks.  The Rolling Squares block was paper pieced and I believe I'm getting the hang of it.  I made an error on the Star and Pinwheel block, but I love the way it looks, so I'm sticking with it.
