Second Edition of the Cross-Hatch Quilt Top

For this version, I mixed up the solid color squares, instead of keeping them in color order.  I really love how all the versions turned out.  If you want to make your own, the tutorial is here.  You can easily adjust the size of your quilt by changing the size of the squares and HSTs.  For this quilt, I used 5" squares and HSTs, instead of the 5.5" in the tutorial.

The Solid Cross-Hatch Quilt Top is Complete, the First Edition

I'm really happy with this Solid color version of the Cross-Hatch Quilt Top, warts and all.  On the Black and White version, I planned imperfection; this time it just happened.  Guess I'm Amish at heart.

I have enough squares and HST ready for another quilt top, Guess I better get busy!

As you can see, it's Frisco approved.  I had the darndest time getting and keeping him off this quilt top!  This time I made the squares 5", instead of 5.5".  That made the quilt top smaller, 51" x 64", as opposed to 56" x 70".  Maybe I'll try it with 4" squares sometime in the future.

The Beginning of a Solids Cross-Hatch Quilt Top

I really liked the Black and White Cross-Hatch Quilt Top; so I decided to make two more using solid color scraps.  I have plenty to those!  I spent some time sorting, then cutting enough 5" squares for the two new quilt tops.  Then I made the 80 HSTs I'll need for two tops.  I've become a believer in doing two at a time!

I am assembling each quilt top separately because I want them to look different.  I have the first 7 rows assembled, and the next 3 rows are already pinned together.  I just needed a little break before assembling them.  BTW, I'm using my own tutorial, it just makes my life easier.

Cross-Hatch Quilt Top

I really love how this turned out.  I considered adding borders but vetoed myself; I'm really not much of a border quilter.  The quilt top measures 56" x 70".  I'm written a tutorial in case you'd like to make one, too!  You can find it here.

I think I'm going to make another version in solids.

Carpenter Star Quilt Tops

Yes, I made two Carpenter Star quilt tops.  I made them at the same time; they were fast and easy.  The blue and green one will be for my great grandbaby, due in October; and the red, white, and blue one will be staying in my living room.

A Round Stroller Quilt

I'm going to be a Great Grammy, in the Fall,  I recently read that round quilts are ideal for using with baby strollers.  They have no corners to drag or get caught in the wheels.  I also thought this would be a great playmat.  I'm still using up scraps from the two Best Friends QAL quilts.

The circle measures 44" across.

Sparkling Patchwork quilt top

I'm calling this the Sparkling Patchwork quilt top and it's complete!  I made 9-patches and 4-patches from the scraps of my last 3 quilt tops, the two Best Friends QALs and the Froggy-Girl quilt top.  I contemplated adding a small border but vetoed that thought. It measures 51" x 43".

 I still have more scraps and I have ideas!  Stay tuned

The Froggy-Girl Quilt Top

When I was working on the two Best Friends QAL quilt tops, one of my favorite people reminded me that she LOVES frogs!  She is my cousin's granddaughter.  She's 40 years old and legally blind.  She has limited vision; she started losing her vision at 3 years old.  She's a trained chef and loves photography.  She works as a nanny.

When I cut out the frogs from the Tula Pink fabric, I didn't have enough, so I threw in some owls!  The quilt top measures 48 inches square.

Best Friends QAL, First Quilt Top is Assembled

I'm making two of these Best Friends Quilts at the same time.  This is the first quilt top assembled.  I included the bottom photo so you could see how freakin' big this is!  I didn't measure it, but it's supposed to be 96 inches square.  Talk about fabric-wrangling!

Now, to work assembling the second quilt top.

Lattice Quilt Top

The first 2021 quilt top is finished. Such a simple pattern called "Lattice", it's a freebie from the Fat Quarter Shop. I used a Layer Cake of Sherbet Pips by Aneela Hoey that I've had for ages. Now to piece the quilt back. I love how it turned out.

 The top measures 48" x 57.5".

Diamond Ripples Quilt Top is Complete

This is post-dated because I forgot to blog about it!  This will be the third quilt I've made for this family.  They are great people and I'm happy to help.  Dad is a West Point graduate and currently stationed in Belgium.  Mom is a civil engineer and currently not working except as a mom!  One thing that's great about this family is they always know what they want.  From Belgium, the mom ordered all the fabric, so she was sure the quilt would look like they wanted.  I got about 6 different packages because she couldn't find what she wanted from one vendor.

The total time for everything, cutting, and assembly, was about 3 weeks. I did take a couple of days off!  Tomorrow it's going to my LAQ for a spa treatment. It measures 56 x 70".

Pool Party Quilt Top, Pre-cut Challenge

The Pool Party Disappearing-4-Patch quilt top is assembled. It measures 64.5" x 80.5". After assembly, I found a problem but it's staying! Can you spot the problem?

I made this from a layer cake called Pool Party Palette by Kona Cotton. I tried to keep the blues in the order they were in the layer cake, I succeeded for the most part. I'm very happy with the result. This is part of my pre-cut challenge, trying to use up all the precuts I've accumulated over the years.

Birch Point Quilt Top

This is my version of the Birch Point quilt top, pattern by The Blanket Statement.  When I say "my version", I really mean it. I cut and constructed the quilt differently from the pattern. I loved the look of her design but not the method. I did purchase the pattern, fair is fair.  Now to get it quilted by my LAQ.

I'm thinking of a black, gray, and white version, we'll see!

Geese at Sunrise ~ 2, Precut Challenge

This is the layout I chose for the leftover HSTs from the Geese at Sunrise Quilt Top.  I initially thought I'd make pinwheels from the 16 giant HSTs; nope I didn't like that layout.  So I fooled around with the layout for a couple of days, sort of tweaking the design as I walked by the dining room table.  This quilt top measures 45" square.

My "normal" LAQ now has 3 of my quilts to work on, so I'm going to contact someone else about quilting these two.

Geese at Sunrise, Precut Challenge

I'm still challenging myself to use precuts from my stash.  The focus this month is Jelly Rolls. I have at least 5 more jelly rolls in my stash, so I'll be busy for a while!  The jelly roll I used for this project is called Sunrise Colorstory by Kona Cotton.  The blue fabric is from stash. This measures 45" x 57". 

I have enough of these giant HSTs leftover to make a small baby quilt; I'm leaning toward pinwheels but that's a decision for tomorrow.

The Plan B X & Plus Quilt Top

Not bad for just winging it!  I really love how the X & Plus quilt top turned out.  It measures 50x64".

The Plan B X & + Quilt

About 10 days ago, I made these sashing blocks,  ↑.  They were for another project that I decided to forego.  But, I had all of these blocks and I decided I needed to come up with a Plan B

Plan B involved some X and + blocks, 12 to be exact.  Then I made some 4-patch cornerstones.

Today, I assembled the first four 20" blocks that will be part of the Plan B quilt.  I discovered that I don't have enough of the sashing blocks, so that will be my next step.   Many of my quilts are "organic" and this one is no exception.  Organic means I don't know what I'm doing!

The Dresden Blooms Quilt Top is Finished!

Here it is laid out on the lawn.  Right after I took this, the wind came up, so the photo-taking had to move inside.

This is based on the video tutorial from the Missouri Star Quilt Co.  I changed 5 things.  (1) I added .5" to the large background squares, I made them 24.5"  

(2) The tutorial calls for the white strips to be 2, 3, 4, and 5 inches.  I decided on 2.5, 3, 4, and 4.5 inches, it's the little things.

(3) I altered the joining of the Dresden plates; I started at the narrow end with a 3/8" seam and tapered to normal 1/4" seam at the wide end.  This is so the Dresden plate would lay flat.  This method made the Dresden Plates smaller, but having flat plates was so worth it.

(4)  I changed the construction of the inner color circle.  The tutorial called for raw-edge applique, and I really wanted a finished edge.  So I used 2 layers for the circles.  I stitched all the way around, cut a wide slit on the bottom layer, and turned the circle right-side out.

(5), The last thing was dividing one of the Dresden plates in half, then changing the color of the center for one of the halves, to match the adjacent square.

You can find the original video tutorial here.  The tutorial claims this makes a 81" square quilt; it does not, my quilt top is 72" square.
