Scraps and Tidbits

Happy New Year to everyone.

I love using up scraps leftover from previous quilts.  I had all kinds and sizes of triangles leftover from the last quilt top I made.  I actually pondered for awhile before I decided how to use them.  I also had a lot of two different blues to use for the background fabric.

For the quilt back I used two leftover patchwork squares, I couldn't use for the quilt top, and cut some blue squares.  I had 2 yards of Kona Tan in my stash that worked great for the back.  The quilt will measure 54x55 inches after it's quilted.

Scout Quilt Top and Back

I got 'er done, today.  I'm very pleased with both the quilt top and back.  The quilt top measures 55x60 inches.  I used 18 different fabrics rather than the 16 called for in the pattern.  My quilt turned out smaller instead of larger, because I decided on a sixth feather, and then added the left-over pieces to make it really long, for the back.  Putting it on the diagonal, challenged my brain, but I'm a math nerd at heart.

As I said, I normally don't buy patterns, I really like to figure things out for myself.  I'm glad I got this one, and only have one critique.  When joining the blocks together to make each side of the feathers, the pattern calls for the sections to be offset 3/8 of an inch.  That didn't work for me; I adjusted to 5/8" for the off-set/over-lap, and it was perfect.  If you use this pattern, be prepared to adjust!

Scout Update

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas.  We had a great day at our daughters' home.

For the past week I've been s l o w l y working on the Scout quilt.  I did change out two of the fabrics before I started cutting.  I changed the green bracelet fabric for a dark brown bracelet, and the light dot for a brown henna.  Here's the new line up.

I really like the "new" contrast. I have the "feathers" all put together; here's a shot of 3 of them laid out on my floor.  No design wall, here!

I should have the quilt top finished tomorrow, and maybe the quilt back, too.

In other news, Kathy Mack of Pink Chalk Fabrics sent me a $20.00 GC, for being a finalist in the Handmade with Love Tutorial Contest.  I was so delighted just to be a finalist, I didn't realize I'd get something, even if I didn't win!  Very exciting.  Since I'm on a fabric diet, I decided this doesn't count.  I ordered two of her Bits and Pieces Scrap Bags.  I've ordered them before and they're wonderful.  They're not always in stock, so I was lucky.

Scout quilt, beginning.

I don't normally purchase quilt patterns.  Even though I'm relatively new at quilting, I like to figure everything out for myself.  Looking at this great pattern from Allison of Cluck Cluck Sew, I know I needed to purchase the pattern.  So, I did.

Here is the fabric I've chosen, I think it's a good mix.

I edited the photo to B&W, so I could see if I had enough contrast.  Lots of mediums, but I think it'll work.

Did you know that I was a Girl Scout.  I was active in scouting almost up until the time I got married.  That's how I met Bob, in scouting.  He was a Sea Scout and I was a Mariner Scout.  All this took place in Long Beach, CA.

Red and White Scrappy Quilt

I started this quilt about a week ago.  I used a lot of my red and white scraps.  The whites are three different fabrics, but I think it works.

Our weather has been unusual, lots of wind and rain, so I couldn't take any natural light photos,  I folded both the top and quilt back to showcase the red patches.  I'll take better photos when I get it back from my long arm quilter.

For the quilt top, I put all the red patches in a center panel.  The lei is from my Aunt Vickie's 80th birthday.  We had a full luau, with a roasted pig cooked overnight in the ground.

This close-up shows the different whites I used, all scraps.

For the back I turned some rectangular patches into two hearts.  They're centered and offsett.

Red Scraps

I have scraps.  No big surprise, I'm sure.  This morning I pulled out some red scraps and I think I'll make a scrappy quilt out of them.  That's the plan, at least.

These are from many different projects, but red is their commonality.

Modern Patchwork Rainbow Quilt

This was such a fun quilt to make.  I had just a dab of fabric left from the stack I won.  I used most of it in the two previous quilts.  I rounded out the quilt top using lots of Kona Chartreuse.  I had not a smidgen left for the back, so I used grays and whites and a small print for the quilt back.

 It's now in the shop.

Colorful Patchwork Quilt

When I made the Simple Kites Patchwork Quilt, I had plenty of fabric left to use in this quilt.  I added tons of fun prints from my stash to make a u nique patchwork design.  I love keeping patchwork totally random.  It kinda drives Bob crazy, but I'm the designer!

Ready for binding

Three quilts back from the long arm quilter, Random Patchwork, HRT Kites and Modern Rainbow.  Now I'm working on the binding.  Since they were all make from the same solid collection, I think I'm going to go with the same binding color, Kona Coal.

I have also decided on a design.  All the time I've been cutting, sewing, slicing and pressing, I wasn't sure how I was going to assemble these HSTs.  Today I'll start sewing them together, it'll take a couple of days, for sure.

Red White and Blue Quilt

I've cut 6 six inch squares of 21 different red or blue fabrics, and 126 six inch squares of Kona White.  I'd decided to make HST; I'd matched a color square with a white square and sewn opposite sides together, when a brilliant idea popped in my head.  Why not make some four patch blocks, too.

I took one from each group and those will be the four patch blocks, I'm using the Magic Four Patch Tutorial.  I'm not sure, yet, what I'll do with them, but I'm making them anyway.

Now, I'll sew opposing sides again, before slicing each block to end up with 42 four patch blocks and 420 HSTs.  I don't have a firm plan, obviously, so I'll just see what happens when I start laying them out.
