The Tile Quilt Top and a Tutorial

This is the Tile Quilt Top.  I made it for the Two Color Quilt Challenge hosted by the MQG and American Patchwork and Quilting magazine.  I based the quilt on the tile work of Athos Bulcão, a Brazillian artist.  Below is a photo of his work.

I kept my blocks large, in the spirit of my inspiration.

I'm very excited about getting it quilted by one of my quilt guild members, Nancy, she normally doesn't do commissions, but I'm grateful she's going to quilt this for me.  I love her quilting artistry.

Two Color Quilt Challenge

American Patchwork & Quilting has issued the Two-Color Quilt Challenge to Modern Quilt Guild Members.  You can find all the info here and here.

I've never shied from a challenge, so I got designing.  I decided to make a bed-sized quilt and use Kona White and Kona Storm.  Kona Chartuese is one of my favorites but White won out because of the room I'm planning on using it in.  Above is the photo that inspired my design.  I researched and found that this tiled panel by Athos Bulcão, a Brazillian artist.

Using the 8-at-a-time tutorial from Blossom Heart Quilts, I've made 112 (5.5") HSTs.  I trued them up using a new method.  I thought I'd share it.

1. Line-up the ruler along the stitching line, right at 5.5", the desired size of the HST.  
2. Trim along both sides of the ruler.
3. Turn the HST and ruler, as below and line up at 5.5" again and trim off those points.

This method was really fast, which made me very happy, considering the number of HSTs I had to trim.

The Giving Quilts are complete

I'm so happy that I can check these as finished.  I'm biased, but I think they turned out really well.  These are my 4th and 5th finishes for 2018!

 Each quilt is different.  I made the quilt tops in February as samplers for my guild.  We'd been "building 12.5" blocks for a year and I presented these as a prototype for assembly of the blocks into charity quilts.  If you want to make something similar, the tutorial is here.

I have math skills!

My quilt guild, the Temecula Valley MQG, has been collecting blocks to make charity quilts.  We've selected our recipient, Jacob's House, and we're excited!  BUT, we only have enough 12.5" blocks to make 5 lap size quilts, bummer.  I came across a photo on the Boulder MQG blog that gave me inspiration on how to "extend" our blocks to make more quilts.

Riley Blake Creative Rockstar Fabric Challenge, Spring 2017

I finished this quilt more than a month before the deadline of April 30th.  Why you ask?  Between now and the deadline, I'm going to be mostly out of town.  If you're interested in my adventures, check my IG feed, @janprytz.

I have to tell you that I love this Rock Star fabric collection.  When Riley Blake announced the challenge on MQG, I decided to purchase the entire line, just because I love it.  I did receive the challenge bundle in the mail, and it became a raffle prize at my guild, Temecula Valley MQG.

Plus, I'm patting myself on the back for using the quilt labels I got from Mountain Street Arts, on Etsy.  I love them.

I love this quilt, I know, I know, I'm repeating myself.  Right now, it's in the washing machine, can you believe that after all the rain we've had, the fence was dirty!

Latifah Saafir Lecture and Trunk Show, part two

I decided to break up this post into two parts.

Convergence from the No Attitude pattern.  This s her first Bias Tape Quilt!

This is her Grafic fabric line being shown in a Clam Shell BOM pattern.

This is the first Clam Shell quilt Latifah made, the clam shells are 8 inches.

These next two photos show her 2nd Clam Shell quilt, much bolder using 12 inch clam shells.

This quilt is "Up in the Air", it was her first exploration of Improv. 

Front and Back of a Modern Log Cabin.

These two quilts are called "Think and Wonder".  They're improv quilts using a focus fabric.

This beauty is called Buzzed Birds.  It's paper-pieced for accuracy.  Latifah explained that getting precision using traditional Half Rectangle Triangles was near to impossible, so she designed her own paper-piecing pattern using Adobe.

Latifah Saafir Lecture and Trunk Show, part one

I was invited to attend this event at the Ontario Museum of History and Art, how could I pass that up!  I went up really early because this is SoCal and our traffic is notorious; I found a diner to have dinner and had plenty of time.  I had to arrange for my dogs to be walked and fed but it all worked out great.

I must warn you this is photo overload.

Latifah is very animated and I had a hard time getting a clear photo of her.  I think this one works.  Below is the photo I asked someone to take of us together.  Yes, I have my jacket on, the room was freezing.  I was surprised no one else asked to have their photo taken with her.  She's a Modern Quilting Rockstar!

This is one of the first quilts she designed, it's called The Big Log.  You'll notice that most of her quilts have a very wide 1-inch binding, this is a design choice.  Latifah is an engineer by training, and you can certainly see her background in many of her quilts.

A modern take on the Pickle Dish is a Mole Hill variation.

This quilt is named Huckleberry; it uses the 6-minute circle technique.  It's the first Latifah Saafir quilt that appeared in a book!
