Riley Blake Creative Rockstar Fabric Challenge, Spring 2017

I finished this quilt more than a month before the deadline of April 30th.  Why you ask?  Between now and the deadline, I'm going to be mostly out of town.  If you're interested in my adventures, check my IG feed, @janprytz.

I have to tell you that I love this Rock Star fabric collection.  When Riley Blake announced the challenge on MQG, I decided to purchase the entire line, just because I love it.  I did receive the challenge bundle in the mail, and it became a raffle prize at my guild, Temecula Valley MQG.

Plus, I'm patting myself on the back for using the quilt labels I got from Mountain Street Arts, on Etsy.  I love them.

I love this quilt, I know, I know, I'm repeating myself.  Right now, it's in the washing machine, can you believe that after all the rain we've had, the fence was dirty!

The Disappearing Quilt Blocks Challenge quilt top is finished.

I haven't been posting my progress on this quilt, but I have been working hard.  I'm going to Quiltcon next wee, and feel like I'm under a deadline!

I used three different disappearing blocks for this design.  Two you probably know all about, the disappearing 9-patch and the disappearing 4-patch; the third block is the Intersection Block that I found on Film in the Fridge.

This quilt top measures 77" x 77".  Now, I'm off to contruct the quilt back.

The Disappearing Blocks ~ Progress Report!

I have been busy sewing, not posting.  I made 17 Disappearing Four Patch blocks (one didn't make it into the photo!).

Then I made 16 Disappearing Nine Patch Blocks.  I have more blocks to make with a different Disappearing block, then I'll be able to put a quilt top together.

The Disappearing Blocks

I've decided to participate in the 2017 Riley Blake Rockstar Fabric Challenge.  I went ahead a purchased the Rockstar fabric, plus five solids that I thought wold work well.  The first blocks I'm making are Disappearing Four-Patch blocks.

I did two test blocks using different fabric from my stash.  I'm using this test fabric in a sampler quilt; so nothing will be wasted.  In case you're interested, the block on the left started with four 7" squares and finishes at 12.5", the smaller block started with four 6" squares and finished at 10.5".

Once the test was done, I started cutting the Rockstar fabric and made 4 blocks, today.  I tried to give them a touch of "modern" by varying the depth of the cuts in the center.  There are many more blocks to go and not all of them will be 4-patch.

It's small but mighty!

I seem to say this a lot, about my quilts - I really love this one.  It was such a great challenge from Riley Blake Fabrics, to use their Sashing Stash fabric.  You could make anything, as long as it was quilted.  Me, I made a quilt, of course!  I rarely hand stitch, but last night I hand stitched the binding because it's small 34" x 34".

I had a hard time keeping this as the quilt back.  I almost caved and made two quilts!

MQG ~ Riley Blake Designs Fabric Challenge ~ Quilt Back is finished

If you know me, you know that I piece 98% of my quilt backs.  I do it for a few reasons.

It's a challenge.
It uses up scraps.
Each side of the quilt is "special".

Many times the quilt back becomes my favorite of the two sides.  Not this time, I love both the top and the back.

I'd planned on quilting this small quilt myself, but I've chickened out.  I'll call my LAQ, tomorrow and see if she can fit it in!  If she can't I'll give it a try, but I'm really afraid of messing it up!

We have rain today, so the photos were taken inside and the light isn't the best.

MQG ~ Riley Blake Designs Fabric Challenge ~ Quilt Top is finished

The borders are on and I think they're pretty creative.  I used some of the Flying Geese from the Sashing Stash fabric that Riley Blake sent.  The quilt top measures 34 inches square.  I'm calling it done.  Now, I'm waiting for the fabric I ordered for the quilt back to be delivered.

None of the LQS stocked the Riley Blake solids that I could use in this challenge, so Fat Quarter Shop got my business.

MQG ~ Riley Blake Designs Fabric Challenge

I feel like I'm "getting there"!  I decided to use the Sashing Stash Fabric the way it was designed to be used, as a short cut to making small units.  In this case I used four little squares for the corner-stones.  I think I kept it modern by not having them all the same, some have the black on the top left and some on the top right.  (It's the little things.)

After I joined the vertical rows, I spend a couple of days walking past and moving the rest of the sashing around.  I really wanted the sashing to be a good mix.

Right now this measures 30 inches square.  I'm going to add a border, then see if it's "done".

MQG ~ Riley Blake Designs Fabric Challenge.

Riley Black Designs offered to send MQG members some fabric and issued the challenge to use it in a project.  There were a few of stipulations, the item had to be quilted, you needed to use the fabric they sent - Sashing Stash, and you could only add Riley Blake C100 & C120 solids.  They also encouraged original designs.

I've been making traditional blocks with a modern twist, for the past 3 days.  Next I'll add some sashing and use some of the Sashing Stash fabric, they sent 3/4 of a yard.  I think this is going in the right direction.
