Best Friends QAL, the first one is complete

Boy, photographing a queen-size quilt is a challenge.  I finally hung it from the rain gutter, above the garage door.  I really love how this turned out.  It's a housewarming gift for a great couple.

I had 6 quilts to put the binding on and this is #5, only one more to go, and it's another Best Friends quilt.

Giving Love Quilt or #7, is complete!

This is the 3rd Giving Love Quilt I've made, you can read about why I made another here.  It's for my cousins' daughter, Ellen.

I love the sunlight streaming through the quilt back.  Below is a close-up of the Dragonfly panto that is my current favorite.

The Froggy-Girl Quilt is Complete!

One of my cousins, actually one of my cousins' granddaughters, loves frogs. She's 40 years old and legally blind. She has very limited vision; she started losing her vision at 3 years old. She's a trained chef and loves photography. She works as a nanny. And she's one of my favorite people.  

When I cut out the frogs from the Tula Pink fabric, I didn't have enough, so I threw in some owls! The quilt top measures 48 inches square.

The Plan B X & + Quilt is Finished!

I'm so happy with how this turned out. Many of my quilts are "organic" and this one is no exception. Organic means I don't know what I'm doing, but the end result is perfect.  This is the 15th quilt I've finished this year.  The Stay-At-Home order means no travel, no travel means more sewing time.  It's a good trade-off.  I have two trips booked for next year, I'll have to wait to see if they'll actually happen.

Kassia's Quilt is finished

When my daughter Sharon asked me to make a quilt for her sons' half-sister, I was happy to do it.  Kassia is a great girl and in addition to my grandson, she has 3 brothers.  She's surrounded by boys!

Sharon says that every time Kassia visits her home, she wraps herself in a quilt.  Of course, since I'm a quilter, there are plenty of quilts, but Sharon wanted her to have one of her own.

This is my 8th finish this year.

A Really Old Quilt

This quilt was made by my Grandmothers' Great Grandmother.  It just came into my possession via a cousin who is downsizing.  She'd listed it on Craig's List and her sister sprang into action and said she should consider giving it to me because I'm a quilter.  A few text messages and emails resulted in the quilt arriving at my house.  I assured both cousins that it would stay in the family.  It needs some TLC but it's really in good shape.

My grandmother was born in 1891.  We don't know which of her great grandmother's made this quilt, but they were all born in the 1700s.  I bet it was made in the late 1700s or early 1800s and of course, it was all stitched by hand.

I had lunch with my friend Jane this week and described the quilt to her.  She asked if it was a Drunkards' Path, and I bet it is.  What do you think?

Houston, We Have A Problem

The is the Red, White and Blue Baby Quilt top that I finished in January.  Here is the post about it.

When I posted the finished quilt on social media, I got a call from my eldest.  She and her sister and my granddaughter were aghast at what they saw on the back of the quilt.  I couldn't see what they saw until I downloaded my camera photos to my pc, and viewed the photo from a distance.  Sure enough, there's a problem.  I will get it fixed.  I can't remove it because it's already quilted, but I'm thinking applique of some sort should work.

A 2 by 4 Baby Quilt Top

This 2 by 4 quilt top was so much fun and easy to make.  Since I've abandoned the idea of a temperature quilt this year, I took some of that fabric and cut 3" strips.  The tutorial for this can be found here, it's by Ashley of Film in the Fridge.  I wanted it to be fun and bright and I think I succeeded.  It measures 30.5 x 32.5.

2017 Finished Quilt Recap

These are the quilts I finished this year, large and small.  This is what happens when I travel a lot.  I was gone from home 100 days in 2017, and all that travel really cuts into the stitching time!  Some of these are listed in my Etsy shop, some have been or will be gifted and one is staying right here at Casa Prytz.

I have two additional quilts at my LAQ, and they will be 2018 finishes.

Riley Blake Creative Rockstar Fabric Challenge, Spring 2017

I finished this quilt more than a month before the deadline of April 30th.  Why you ask?  Between now and the deadline, I'm going to be mostly out of town.  If you're interested in my adventures, check my IG feed, @janprytz.

I have to tell you that I love this Rock Star fabric collection.  When Riley Blake announced the challenge on MQG, I decided to purchase the entire line, just because I love it.  I did receive the challenge bundle in the mail, and it became a raffle prize at my guild, Temecula Valley MQG.

Plus, I'm patting myself on the back for using the quilt labels I got from Mountain Street Arts, on Etsy.  I love them.

I love this quilt, I know, I know, I'm repeating myself.  Right now, it's in the washing machine, can you believe that after all the rain we've had, the fence was dirty!

The Stereo Baby Quilt is complete!

It's not raining!  That means I can get some outside shots.  Ben is helping.

There's a little more sun in the front yard, so I'm using the grass as a backdrop.  I love how this quilt turned out!

This the the Quilt Back for the Stereo Quilt

My customers requested a zigzag pattern on the quilt back.  I'd made zigzags on their previous quilt back that ran horizontal, this time the zigzags are vertical and bolder.  I've contacted my favorite long-arm quilter Janiel and she says she'll be able to get this project back to me by the middle of January.  That'll give me time to finish it up, and ship it by the end of January when they want it.

This is sweet Ben, he's never far from me.  He needs a haircut, but that'll wait until we have warmer weather.

The Stereo Quilt Top is Finished!

Today I joined the final three rows together, then I stitched the three groups together for the final assembly of this quilt top.  The orange is this project is Kona Kumquat; it really brightens up the Max's Adventure Spoonflower fabric.

At this stage, I normally go down to the tennis courts and take outside photos of the progress.  Today we're having cold and ferocious Santa Ana winds; outside photos just wouldn't work.  I ventured into to Billiards Room and found a blank wall large enough to tape-up the quilt top.

I started this quilt top on 11/25 and finished it on 12/2.  I have a busy weekend ahead, so I'll piece the quilt back next week.  The quilt top measures 64 x 49.5 inches, pretty close the 60 x 48 inches requested.

Advice for the Stereo Quilt

I'm making steady progress on the Stereo quilt for my lovely customers.  I wanted to comment on the construction for anyone who is considering making this quilt.

The first thing is Julie Herman of Jaybird quilts has developed a very useful tool, the Super SideKick ruler, and I really recommend it for this quilt.  I'm an experienced quilter and I found this tool very valuable.  She has other great tools that I haven't used because I normally don't follow patterns.

Two:  I wouldn't recommend the Stereo pattern for beginning quilters.  I think beginners would quickly become frustrated.  For example, the pattern suggests laying out the triangle and half triangle units, then sewing the rows together.  That would work for an experienced quilter but a beginner would be lost because all those 45-degree angles just don't go together easily.  You need to join two adjacent units, like above, then join them all together!  It's an easy step that I thought I'd share, in case you're a beginner and want to make this quilt

Progress on the Stereo Quilt

It took me a couple of days to get all the pieces cut for this quiilt.  

Yesterday, I joined almost all the  half-triangles together to form whole triagles.

Today, I laid all the pieces out on my dining room design-table.  Earlier this year I bought a portable design wall, one that had been highly recommended.  It didn't work for me, it kept snapping apart!

I pieced the first three row together.  I think this is going to be a great quilt.
